News Corp. closes News of the World as a result of the phone hacking scandal. It finished its 168-year reign with a classy cover. News International's Rebekah Brooks keeps her job, however, a plan that is causing "lynch mobs" to form. This is going to get uglier before it gets better and it looks increasingly like some big names will fall, possibly including Dow Jones head Les Hinton. He was on top of News International when the phone hacking in question took place. Rupert Murdoch, of course, will emerge relatively unscathed, although his company did put its takeover of BSkyB on hold...
NBC Universal promotes Suzanne Kolb to president of E! Entertainment. She is planning a slate of scripted programming. Kolb had been president of marketing, news and online at the channel... Harry Smith leaves CBS after 25 years for NBC where he will be a correspondent on Brian Williams' new newsmagazine... Turner Sports grabs a huge talent (literally), recruiting Shaquille O'Neal to its stable... CNN hires Cornell Belcher as a contributor. Some are crying foul since he's in the employ of President Barack Obama as a pollster...
Lauren Conrad (yes, her) joins Forbes as a columnist... The Atlantic taps the gloriously named Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg (better known as @fakeTV) to be its new video editor... Ronan Gardiner moves up to publisher at Men's Health...
Josh Topolosky is building a behemoth. He recruits three more Engadget writers to his new SB Nation-affiliated site as well as two other big-name talents in Thomas Hudson and Dieter Bohn... Salon founder David Talbot rejoins the company as interim CEO. He replaces Richard Gingras who resigned in late June... The Huffington Post suspends Amy Lee for over-aggregation. The masses thought that wasn't exactly fair (and they are correct)...
The Hartford Courant cuts jobs in the newsroom as well as positions in production and administration... John Feinstein quits his gig at Navy Radio Network because CBS won't have him participate in a documentary about the Army/Navy game...
Facebook hires Sarah Feinberg, a former special assistant to President Obama. She joins the communications team at the social network... Color loses chief product officer DJ Patil. That's not a great sign for the company which raised $41 million essentially on the strength of its team... Facebook poaches Tom Stocky from Google. He'll be director of product and was most recently the Goog's director of product management for search, client, and infrastructure... And there are changes at Time, Deep Focus, and more...
