Layoffs at PBS; Troubles at Katie

June 11, 2013
Page Six hears that Katie Couric "might not make it to a third season" at ABC. The anchor-turned-daytime host might be joining her old boss Jeff Zucker at CNN. Her current show is in chaos on and off-screen and is undergoing a shakeup because, as an unnamed source says, "the show... hasn't lived up to expectations." Meanwhile, CNN rehires Kelly Wallace, who had been at iVillage but was the 24-hour news network's national correspondent when she left seven years ago. He had been national political correspondent at Reuters... BuzzFeed hires Miriam Elder as foreign editor. She is currently The Guardian's bureau chief in Moscow. "Miriam is a great journalist and social web native who has a great sense both for news and for the next big story," BuzzFeed EIC Ben Smith said in a statement announcing the news... Richard Rushfield takes a job with Yahoo Entertainment as features editor. Most recently, the long-time journalist was Los Angeles bureau chief at BuzzFeed, although that job ended soon after it began...

PBS NewsHour is laying off staff as part of a major reorganization. The changes will start on July 1, and include shuttering its Denver and San Francisco offices. An internal memo cited "funding challenges" and "opportunities presented by new technologies" as the reason. Going forward, the show will rely more on freelancers... Al Jazeera America hires Josh Bernstein and hands him the "corruption, fraud, waste and official wrongdoing" beat. He had been at KDVR in Denver and also worked at The Daily...
