When was it, exactly, that Ron Burkle became the great underwriter of independent media in America? Starting today, it would seem. Tuesday's the day bids are due in McClatchy's auction of The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, both of which Burkle is bidding on through his Yucaipa Cos. investment vehicle, in conjunction with the Newspaper Guild.
