Details

This course will take you through the process of outlining, writing, editing, and submitting a children's picture book. Through weekly writing assignments, you'll master essential craft elements including plotting, outlining, and crafting a narrative arc.

In this class, you will learn how to:

  • Write in pictures
  • Use techniques for hooking readers and editors
  • Practice the science of making language sing
  • Understand why editors like to choose their own illustrators
  • Apply the nuts and bolts of marketing a manuscript

By the end of class, you will have:
A completed picture book manuscript, along with a cover letter for sending it out.

Instructor

Jacquie Hann
Jacquie Hann is the author and illustrator of children's books including That Man Is Talking To His Toes, Up Day Down Day (a Junior Literary Guild Selection), and Kick Block Punch. Her work has been widely distributed and published with foreign translations and her illustrations have appeared in Good Housekeeping, Humpty Dumpty, Children's Digest, and Scholastic magazines.

Jacquie studied at the School of Visual Arts and Parsons School of Design, where she taught how to write and illustrate children's books for many years.
