In this course, learn how to build a website using WordPress, one of the most popular and robust content management systems.
Through lectures, assignments, and interactive online discussions, you'll gain hands-on experience working within the open-source platform.
In this class, you will learn how to:
- Install WordPress on your web hosting server with your own domain name
- Use WordPress to publish pages, articles, and multimedia content like video or photos
- Change the appearance of your site using WordPress themes, widgets, and simple CSS coding
- Use WordPress plugins to improve your site navigation, enable Google Analytics, or optimize your site for search engines
- Connect with the WordPress community to establish the authoirty of your business or personal brand
A live WordPress website that you can maintain and update on your own.
Admission Requirements: Students should be prepared to sign up for a web hosting plan (less than $10 a month) and domain name (around $15 a year). If you already have a web host, please have your FTP server name, user name, and password ready. If you already have a WordPress site, please know your login information.
The online classroom has several components:
- Lessons: Learn new skills through video-based lessons
- Discussion: Join a weekly live, interactive discussion via IM and video
- Assignments: Complete homework and receive instructor feedback
- Forums: Exchange resources, meet peers, and ask your instructor questions

Sallie started hand-coding HTML in 1994 to produce a web version of her electronic journal. She discovered WordPress in 2005 and flung herself on it with gratitude because it made developing websites so much easier. In 2009, she became organizer of the East Bay WordPress Meetup.
