Details

Data is a science. But it’s also an art. Learn how you can use an infographic as a key strategy element for your content business. We’ll focus on how to think visually about data, and how to use an infographic to drive engagement, sales, or awareness for your brand. You'll also learn how to sense of website analytics, internal data, and content to build a data visualization that engages and informs. 

In this class, you will learn how to:
  • Use infographics to engage an audience in your brand, cause, or mission
  • Create and evaluate the merits of a data visualization  
  • Work with free online tools to produce infographics  
  • Overhaul your company's analytics and data for compelling content 
  • Understand the language of marketers, designers, and content producers -- and what you need from each  to produce your infographic 
By the end of class, you will have: 
A spec for a data visualization and an understanding of the online tools available for infographics.  
 
The online classroom has several components:
  • Lessons: Learn new skills through video-based lessons
  • Discussions: Join a weekly live, interactive discussion via IM and video
  • Assignments: Complete homework and receive instructor feedback
  • Forums: Exchange resources, meet peers, and ask your instructor questions

Alberto Cairo
Alberto Cairo is the author of The Functional Art: an Introduction to Information Graphics and Visualization, published by PeachPit Press, a division of Pearson Education. He was the director for infographics and multimedia at Editora Globo, the magazine division of the biggest media group in Brazil, where he acted as an executive editor for the weekly news magazine Época and as an internal consultant for 12 other publications.

Alberto led the creation of the interactive infographics department at El Mundo, where his team won more infographics international awards than any other news organization worldwide between 2001 and 2005. He teaches information graphics and visualization at the School of Communication at the University of Miami and was an assistant professor at the School of Journalism, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
