Course Details

You have a movie you want to write but it's not for the multiplex. It's more off-beat, character-driven, art house fare. No car chases. No one-line high concept pitches. No superheroes. In other words, an indie. Writing a screenplay for an independent movie combines the rudiments of mainstream screenplay writing with the poetics of fiction writing, poetry, and memoir. It's a distinctly hybrid form designed to draw out your individual voice and utilize it to infuse your storytelling with empathy, insights, and humor. A well-written indie not only is the first step toward bringing your independent-minded vision to the screen; it also can open doors with producers, agents, and studios -- all of whom are forever searching for that unique, singular voice.

In this intense, 12-week workshop, you'll work with two instructors; veteran film and TV producer Matt Roshkow, and screenwriter Daniel Housman, who wrote the upcoming indie The Treatment, which was recently accepted into the Tribeca Film Festival. The goal: to write and workshop a complete screenplay for an independent film.

In this class, you can expect to learn:

  • How to create memorable characters that reflect your personal vision
  • How to play with narrative structure to find the most dynamic form for your story
  • How to harness your individual voice and incorporate it into a filmic story
  • How to draw on related genres to create a multi-dimensional screenplay
  • How to subvert and redefine established genres
  • How various indie auteurs from Cassavetes to Soderbergh have recreated the modern screenplay

Admission requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and a writing sample (less than 2,000 words).

Testimonials

I never thought that an experience like 12-Week Indie Screenwriter could happen to someone like me. It was this lucky convergence, the kind that only happens in New York. Take two down to earth fun smart talented and humble industry pros, and stick them with a handful of students who stumbled into an under-enrolled" class of four. What did we get? 12 weeks of hard core, no apologies, lovely, excruciating redemptive weeks of writing writing writing. I am enrolling in this class again because I miss the blessed panic, the connection to other writers, and the hurtling towards the truth of what you can do when you stop making excuses. And secretly, I miss the ass-kicking!" -- Gabrielle Lipson
