Writing for NYC Publications
With a former New York Daily News columnist
Course Details
With the rise of local content as the new hot niche, there's more demand than ever for stories by New Yorkers from the perspective of intimate experience. In fact, the personal essay is emerging as the essential feature at newspapers, magazines, online publications, and blogs throughout the city. Everyone's looking for new writers with confident, memorable voices. The skills from this class will put you ahead of the pack in navigating the writing demands of today's print and web-based media world. In this class, you'll learn how to take your basic idea and shape it into a killer essay. Our priority will be mastering the 500- to 600-word format that is most in demand these days (and which even experienced writers find hard to master). You will also learn reporting and writing tricks that you can later apply to anything you work on. This course will help you get comfortable with both revealing yourself on the page and packaging yourself as a distinctive product. Expect lots of supportive feedback and a safe place to develop your voice. This five-week workshop is taught by a former nationally syndicated New York Daily News columnist and blogger whose students have gone on to write for such publications as The New York Times, The New York Daily News, amNewYork, New York Press, The Village Voice, Christian Science Monitor, and more. By the end of this class, students will have: Course Syllabus
