The best children's books are as poetic, exciting, funny, and poignant as any work of adult literature.

In this class, you'll develop a children's book from an initial concept to a dummy ready to submit to publishers. Through writing assignments, you'll focus your ideas and build your story. You'll also create an illustration portfolio ready to present to art directors. The entire process of creating a children's book will be explored, including writing a first draft, making sketches and character studies, editing, and creating finished artwork and dummies. We'll also discuss how to approach publishers.

This class is designed for writers and/or illustrators. Applicants need not be skilled in both areas.

In this class, you will learn how to:

  • Turn your ideas into a finished manuscript
  • Go from sketches and character studies to finished artwork
  • Create pacing and flow
  • Create a finished dummy to submit to publishers and an illustration portfolio to submit to art directors
  • Approach publishers

By the end of class, you will have:

A complete dummy of a children's book ready to send to publishers.
